Author Visit – "Four Acres under Slavnik: A Slovenian Migration Story" by Amy Fradel
The small country we now know as Slovenia was still part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1913, the year that John and Mary Fradel left their homes in the valley under the mountain called Slavnik. Using family letters, oral histories, and historical research, Amy Fradel brings to life the dissolution of the empire, life under Italian fascism, war, and the transformation to communist Yugoslavia through the voices of her family who stayed Primorska and those who emigrated to Pennsylvania. The book reads like a novel as its characters tell their intimate and authentic thoughts about their views on social and historic events of their time, and the challenges they face to adapt to life in a new country or to survive in the old one. The story will resonate with anyone with immigrant ancestors.
Books will be available for purchase and signing.
